Financial transparency is one of the Ghana Medical Foundation’s highest organizational standards. Donors trust GMF with resources intended to serve students and communities in Ghana, and we believe that trust should be treated with great care. Our leadership is committed to maintaining clear financial practices, responsible oversight, and confidence that every expense can be connected to the organization’s mission.
Donors are welcome to include a note with their donation or contact GMF leadership to express a preference for a specific program, such as health education clinics, scholarships, mentorship, or healthcare exposure.
All donations are processed through the same financial system and remain subject to GMF’s standard review and allocation procedures. When a donor requests that funds support a particular approved project, GMF will make every reasonable effort to honor that preference and direct a greater portion of the contribution toward that area.
Direct program spending is GMF’s highest financial priority. Our goal is to use at least 80% of donated funds for program-related costs, while reserving up to 20% for necessary administrative and operational expenses.
Administrative costs make the programs possible. They may include financial processing, required filings, communication systems, technology, transportation coordination, recordkeeping, and other essential expenses needed to operate responsibly. GMF works to keep these costs limited while ensuring the organization has the structure required to deliver effective programs.
Projects and major uses of funds are reviewed and approved through the Board of Directors. This process helps ensure that financial decisions remain aligned with GMF’s mission and organizational priorities.
Specific expenses are also reviewed by the appropriate team lead and by the board member responsible for overseeing that team. This creates multiple levels of accountability before and after funds are used.
GMF does not simply transfer funds to outside local partners. Funds are used through approved GMF programs and coordinated by the organization’s local team.
Every expense must be documented, related to an approved activity, and reasonably justified as supporting the mission. Records are maintained so that spending can be reviewed and connected to the program, project, or operational need it supported.
Donors can follow the impact of GMF’s work through updates on the organization’s website, social media platforms, and newsletters. These updates may include program progress, project results, student participation, photographs, stories, and explanations of how financial support is being used.
As GMF’s reporting systems continue to develop, the organization will work to provide donors with increasingly clear information about program spending and measurable outcomes.
GMF’s financial needs and systems will evolve as the organization expands, but the underlying principles will remain the same. We believe that financial transparency builds trust, and trust allows effective programs and projects to grow.
Leadership will continue applying these standards as new programs, partnerships, and responsibilities are added. Every financial decision should support the mission, withstand appropriate review, and respect the confidence donors place in the Ghana Medical Foundation.
