Building Partnerships Across Ghana

From April 28 through May 4, the Ghana Medical Foundation completed an important site visit across Accra, Kasoa, Winneba, Odoben, and Cape Coast. The trip brought our team together with schools, hospitals, medical students, healthcare professionals, community representatives, and prospective local staff.

The purpose of the visit was simple: listen, build relationships, and determine how GMF’s educational and public health programs can best serve students in Ghana.

A Week of Progress

Throughout the week, the GMF mission and pilot program were presented to several schools, hospitals, and university groups. These meetings helped establish the foundation for partnerships with:

• University of Cape Coast Medical School

• University of Accra Medical School

• Saint Gregory Hospital

• Odoben Hospital

• Odoben High School

• Winneba General Hospital

• Winneba High School

Additional conversations are continuing with the University of Ghana Medical School, the University of Ghana Public Health Department, Winneba Hospital, and community leadership in Winneba.

An Immediate Connection at the University of Cape Coast Medical Coast

One of the most encouraging moments of the trip occurred at the University of Cape Coast Medical School. GMF presented its mission and proposed programs to six medical students serving in student leadership.

The students immediately recognized the opportunity to support younger students interested in healthcare careers. The proposed partnership was warmly accepted, creating a promising foundation for mentorship, health education, outreach, and future volunteer involvement.

Other medical students also expressed interest in joining GMF and supporting its work.

Schools Ready to Move Forward

The response from participating schools was equally encouraging. Meetings at Odoben High School, Odoben Middle School, and Winneba High School demonstrated strong interest in educational support, health programming, and healthcare career opportunities for students.

At Odoben High School, the excitement was especially clear when a Ester, the assistant school administrator, responded to the presentation by asking:

That response captured the urgency and enthusiasm felt throughout the trip. Schools were not simply interested in discussing future possibilities—they were ready to begin.

Connecting Education and Healthcare

Hospital visits were essential to understanding how students could receive realistic exposure to healthcare careers. Productive meetings were held with Saint Gregory Hospital and Odoben Hospital, creating early opportunities to explore:

• Professional mentorship

• Health education clinics

• Future internship and medical attachment pathways

Strengthening Our Local Team

The site visit also provided an opportunity to meet with and orient Eric Bankz, GMF’s Local Director. Strengthening local leadership is essential to ensuring that programs are culturally informed, properly coordinated, and responsive to the needs of partner communities.

The team also interviewed prospective staff members and continued building relationships with local professionals who may support program operations, healthcare education, community outreach, and student coordination.
